La Mesa city officials want to rid neighborhoods of properties with excessive weeds or refuse. Not only are unkempt properties an eyesore to the community, but they also create fire hazards.
The weed-abatement program began in May, after the city council passed a resolution confirming that there were properties in the City with overgrown weeds and unsightly trash.
Shortly after, members of the fire department as well as La Mesa's weed-abatement inspector Carisa Workman began touring the city, looking for wrecked lawns. Once spotted, a notice was sent to the property owner warning them that if the weeds or refuse remained then fines would be handed down.
"In recent years, the cost for clearing weeds or refuse has ranged from $500 to $5000," read the notice sent to property owners. "Therefore, we urge you to take care of this condition on your property."
On Tuesday, the city council will hear from the property owners who object to the ordinance. During that meeting, they will decide whether to proceed with the weed-abatement program.
