As if traffic at San Ysidro's border crossing wasn't bad enough, now the 50,000-plus commuters that cross the border each day will have to wait even longer as construction at the port speeds up.
The purpose of the San Ysidro Port of Entry Border Expansion Project is to decrease wait times by adding more lanes and inspection booths, as well as a realignment of Interstate 5.
In the meantime, however, wait times will only increase.
Beginning today lanes will be closed for as long as 30 hours at a time. The expected delays have prompted the Customs and Border Patrol agency to recommend that commuters cross at Otay Mesa.
“We ask for the public’s patience as we work towards reaching that goal, and their confidence that we are doing everything in our power to minimize traffic disruptions and delays,” said Chris Maston, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego.
