Healthy Works is working to provide low income families with access to produce at local farmers’ markets. Under Fresh Fund, any individual eligible for CalFresh/SNAP, WIC, or SSI/SSDI benefits can request and receive $20 per month in tokens that can be used to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables at participating markets.
Current participating markets are those in San Marcos, Linda Vista, Southeast San Diego, City Heights, and Golden Hill. Booths are available to sign up for the benefits at each weekly market. Time and location details can be found here.
The Healthy Works organization is part of the county’s “Live Well, San Diego! Building Better Health,” initiative, a 10-year program intending to fight chronic disease, obesity, and promote overall health. The group also promotes bike-to-school and bike-to-work, programs, community gardens, and exercise and healthy menus in area schools.
