Councilmember Carl DeMaio wants to send the city's auditor's recommendation of requiring cat owners to register their cats "to to the litter box.”
“This proposal, which will impact every San Diegan who owns a cat, is driven not by a legitimate need. It is nothing more than an intrusive regulation requiring the creation of an unnecessary bureaucracy, all to simply generate revenue for the city in the middle of a budget crisis," stated DeMaio in a July 11 press release.
A performance audit determined that the City could raise up to $500,000 if just 5 percent of the City's cat owners each paid $25 to register their cat.
During a meeting of the audit committee, DeMaio pounced on the recommendation. "When you really peel back the logic the only sense this makes is monetary...You are trying to get money. If that's what we want to do then let's put that down as the justification."
The committee later accepted the audit while stating concerns about the cat registration requirement. The requirement will be reviewed when the contract is up for renewal.
