San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) is asking to pay the City of Oceanside $3000 in exchange for placing smart meter network devices on streetlights. The proposal will be heard during a council hearing this evening.
The devices will collect data using electromagnetic radio frequencies from nearby residential smart meters, later sending that data to SDG&E offices.
In addition to paying the $3000, the utility company will also pay $100 per year to use the City's electricity. That payment will increase in later years to $240 per year.
By using the city's poles, the gas and electric company will not have to build their own poles on public property, something they have been allowed to do since the City granted SDG&E the right to construct poles in the public right-of-way.
