Bankers Hill Residents Oppose St. Paul's Cathedral Project

Members of the Bankers Hill/Park West Community Association agree; the proposal from St.Paul's Cathedral to build two residential and commercial towers in the heart of the Bankers Hill community is wrong for the community. The residents said so in their comments in the project's draft environmental report.

The height of the buildings -- the tallest of the two towers will rise 180 feet, 30 feet above the height limit -- and the fact that one tower on Olive Street would be located on the airport's flight path are among the residents' main concerns. Other objections include setback deviations and negative impacts to the community aesthetic.

The biggest issue appears to be safety. Residents claim that the draft environmental report does not address obstructions to the flight path.

"The Olive Street building...intrudes into the horizontal FAA flight path," reads the comment from the community association. "This significant impact should have been the subject of a detailed discussion; the draft EIR evades this necessary discussion."

"The proposed project is one of the tallest and most massive in size and scale ever proposed in Uptown. There also are potential negative impacts on Balboa Park, as well as to some of the most historically and architecturally distinct neighborhoods in San Diego. It is important that the draft EIR adequately address all potential impacts; the current draft is deficient in this regard."
