Kiting/Dragon and Fish kites

looking out over the blue Pacific from the cliffs at Blacks Beach is inspiring even if you don't have a kite harness strapped to your back.....

i was talking to an old friend today and as we chatted a little bit back and forth on the phone some memories began to surface about the place......

very good ones because i learned to kite there...it's called gliding now.......it was one of the safest places around 'cause the wind current on a good day were always pretty stable.... if all the seagulls were gliding smoothely you knew you could too....the worse that could happen was a water landing...instead of a beach one.....if it was really hot....you got all kinds of up currents....and could soar higher and higher....that was every kiters dream

some of us wore wetsuits so we wouldn't sandpaper our bods when we landed....the most experienced wore bathing suits....which they promptly removed when they landed as Black Beach is bathing suit optional....which in the parliance of the kiters was nude.....

it was never packed .....but there were enough people around....some down at the waters edge doing Tai Chi...it was always fun to join them...and sway and move thru the intricate movements.....the waves seem to dictate which move came next as they slid quietly along the sandy shoreline.....the foam covering your toes as you moved into a new position.....

if you were lazing back further in the sand.....and not participating....they looked like a flock of strange seabirds doing a water ballet.....

if you were an inventerate kiter there was always the 1000 ft climb back up the cliffs to fly again.....take to wing like the birds...once i even tried to follow them out ot sea....just got lost in it.....til some of my flying buddies yelled HEY NAN ...WHAT THE HELL ARE YA DOIN'..at the top of their lungs over the wind rush........and waved me back before i hit the point of no return....but for one brief second i was just one of the flock....

i think everyone especially when they are young dreams of flying...so later when i was laying in a hammock with my honey gazing into the sky watching the seagulls dive and soar .....

all i was thinkin' was

"HEY BIRDIES ...YA GOT NOTHIN' ON ME"!

they're doing so many fun thing with kites now...even windsurfing

Kites on string...creating ur wings.....pulling u across the waves...those Chinese came up with a thoroughly novel and wonderful idea
