It Gets Worse

So this morning, after I read the front page, ranted, and went off to work, I come home and pick up the San Diego lightweight we refer to as a newspaper where I left off. Imagine my horror when I open the "Currents" section (ie: women's section), glance to the top of the page, and read THIS GEM:

"NEWS FLASH: PAP SMEARS - Many doctors are performing unnecessary Pap smears, ignoring guidelines issued by major medical organizations and adding to health care costs. Of 1,212 primary-care doctors who responded to a survey about cervical cancer screening, about one-fifth described practices that were consistent with the latest recommendations from groups, including the American Cancer Society and the United States Preventitive Services Task Force. Most had overused cervical cancer screening."

AM I THE ONLY ONE SEEING THESE WORDS HERE?!?! Unnecessary; ignoring quidelines; adding to health care costs; TASK FORCE; overused!! Is there a reason the other 4/5ths willfully ignored these so-called guidelines? Because female health care adds to health care costs?!?? What the hell? Do they want us to DIE?!? Viagra is available on ALL health care plans, even though it comes with a litany of risks, the most hilarious being "if you experience an erection lasting more than four hours, seek immediate medical attention"?!??!

Last note - in this same section, the headline article is "Busy women often leave one vital item off their to-do list: CARE AND NURTURE YOUR OWNSELF". One of their recommendations: "Get Tested: Starting at age 20, women should be getting clinical breast exams at least every three years. After age 40, get annual clinical breast exams, mammograms, Pap smears and pelvic exams, unless you are at higher risk because of family cancer (meaning more rather than less than the recommended testing)."

So, if we don't do the recommended testing because the powers that be tell us we are "adding to health care costs" and we die anyway because they told us we should be tested annually (off the record), it's our own damn fault.
