It's been a solid week in Mira Mesa, I've discovered the hard way that the buses stop running way too early, and I've yet to figure out the difference between the 921 and the 921A.
Don't forget to have exact change for one of these lovely MTS rides, or you may find yourself dropping $20 for a $2.25 trip. It depends on how desperate you are. Most of the buses are air conditioned but now and again you luck out and land on a bus where the AC is broken, the windows don't open and you're sharing a seat with three landscapers.
By logging on to www.sdcommute.com you can access the mass transit trip planner on the left hand side of the page. This finicky gimmick will save you time once you're on the road but expect to spend a good 15 minutes "talking with the computer" as you try explaining you simply want to get out of Mira Mesa and to the beach. Be specific with your starting point and destination.
The bike racks on the front of the buses make traveling the city by bike convenient, but tough luck if there are already two cyclists on board, you'll be waiting at least a half hour for the next bus, fingers crossed that there's a spot for your environmentally friendly two-wheeled transporter.
With buses back to Mira Mesa ending daily at 7PM, it becomes a little difficult to spend nights out and about in Downtown, gas light district, la jolla, mission bay, etc. So rather than landing a one night stand for the sake of a place to sleep, take a bus back to UTC, and grab a cab for the final 3 miles back to Mira Mesa. With buses running to UTC up until midnight, you can extend your lucky evening in the downtown area. Don't sacrifice the nightlife.
While a cab from downtown, 20+ miles will run you over 50 bucks the 3 mile cab ride from UTC to Mira Mesa may be within your budget.
