SDPD Homicide Det. Kevin Rooney tells the press this morning that a murder investigation is happening in a Paradise Hills case -- an 18-year-old man was shot to death by one of three apparent 17-year-old young men who posed as sellers on Craigslist, the con was to rob the person coming to buy an item.
Rooney states that the victim and his girlfriend had gone to the 2800 block of Casey Street to purchase of an item offered for sale on the website.
Three 17-year-old black males robbed the couple of cash and cell phones, and then fled in a green Honda Accord.
The robbee followed in his vehicle, trying to get a license plate number.
Rooney says the Accord turned around in a cul-de-sac in the 3000 block of Artemia Way and went straight toward the victim's vehicle with no good intent.
"As the vehicles were next to each other, one of the suspects fired a shot, striking the victim," Rooney contends.
The Accord crashed in the 3000 block of Fleming Way. The suspects engaged in a foot flee.
Their feet failed them. Police arrested all three suspects a block from the crime scene, with help from air and K-9 units.
The victim, not yet named until notification of family, was transported to a trauma center. He died at 11:13 p.m.
The three killer teens were booked into Juvenile Hall, charged with suspicion of robbery and homicide. . Now, crime is nothing new from Craigslist, from scams to rape to murder. Recently, there was the many bodies found in Long Island, bodies belonging to women who used Craigslist to offer sexual favors for cash. I myself was once almost a victim of such, when I was selling a guitar and the guy wanted another one of my guitars I did not want to sell, and he tried to run off with it. When I stopped him, he said he would be back and "take care of": me and steal my stuff. The idiot didn't realize he left his fingerprints on my guitar.
But you gotta be careful when either posting or answering online ads, Craigslist, the Reader, anywhere. You are meeting strangers and you have no idea if they are sane, criminals, or what is on their minds. I once bought a laptop from a woman posting an ad; smartly, she met me in a public place; she seemed relieved when I showed up with my girlfriend at the time.
