Local Tuesdays

Well, it's Tuesday. To many locals, it means Taco Tuesday. For the more family-oriented-looking-for-something-different-to-do crowd, it means free museums at Balboa Park.

In a city that thrives on tourism, many people work in the restaurant/entertainment industry. That means working nights and enjoying sunny mornings. And for those who just happen to be off on a Tuesday morning, Balboa Park offers approximately three free museums every week with proof of local residence (valid ID, active military and dependents). Oh yeah, it's also a military town. Shello, Top Gun was filmed here.

Today, being the fourth Tuesday of the month, the following museums are scheduled to be featured, according to the park's website, www.balboapark.org

  • San Diego Air & Space Museum (Not valid for special e xhibitions)
  • San Diego Automotive Museum (Last admission 3:45pm)
  • San Diego Hall of Champions
  • SELECT House of Pacific Relations International Cottages

By the way, when people refer to local San Diegans, we generally are referring to the entire county--with the exception of the few communities that try to be different--ahem, (cough) La Jolla. Get over it. You're not a city. Mayor of La Jolla? La Jolla city ordinance? Yeah, that's what I thought.

A very popular area for enjoying discounted delicious tacos and $.50 ribs (Firehouse) is Pacific Beach (aka PB). My friends and I prefer Fat Fish Cantina Grill. Street tacos for $1 or discounted shrimp tacos with the purchase of a beverage.

PB is known to be the college crowd. However, it has recently evolved to become more diverse. Fear not, non-locals. You needn't wear flip flops and board shorts to try to fit in. Actually, the harder some try, the more obvious it is. We accept you for who you are and how you are...just as long as you're paying our Transient Tourism Tax (TOT) at your hotel. For that, we thank you very kindly.

If you happen to have been suckered--i mean sold into getting a hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter, that's OK, too. Fred's Mexican Cafe, The Local and Las Hadas will do you right. Remember, be you. If you are in the Gaslamp on a Tuesday night, you're probably not a local, unless you happen to work there.

So, whatever you may happen to be washing down your tacos with, raise a glass (hopefully it's happy hour, too). Cheers to being a local in San Diego.
