So, the blackout for today's game has been lifted. Yes! Go Chargers! As a native, I am a little afraid to discover how much red and gold will actually be in the stands. Some of us may be die hard fans for life bleeding blue and gold. But others are indeed bandwagoners--only becoming fans when the team is doing well. Did I say Go Chargers!!!
Regardless of what color anyone will be sporting, these ath-a-letes (ode to Rob Schneider's movie, "Benchwarmers") do have a few things in common. One of which was a well told story in a documentary I watched called BROKE. The story about professional players who lack financial and life guidance in an inevitably short-lived career.
I did a story on the Chargers' Outreach Team a few years back. I followed them and some of the younger pro stars as they volunteered at assisted living homes throughout San Diego. At one of the performances, one of the band members and team security personnel explained exactly what he had witnessed first hand for so many years. He said that NFL did not only stand for the National Football League but it meant "not for long."
It was why they were and probably still are today trying to encourage the newcomers to do more than buy chains and drop bills at the club. They are trying to instill in them life's values even after it's Game Over. That for me is a W. And I'll continue to bleed blue and gold to stand for a team that still believes in humanity and giving back. Go Chargers!
