Heading into the jazz weekend

It all starts on Sept. 12, with multiple choices ahead.

There is compelling jazz and new music to experience three nights in a row this weekend.

Sept. 12, Tonga Ross-Ma'u at Dizzy's

Multi-instrumentalist Ross-Ma'u will be playing the piano, focusing on his original material with a trio of top-flight improvisers, including Antar Martin on the double-bass and Fernando Gomez on the drums. Concert begins at 8 pm. Tickets are $15. Located at 4275 Mission Bay Dr.

Sept. 13, Eric Byers

Concert promoter Bonnie Wright's series debuts with a performance of solo cello with electronics at new venue Bread & Salt, located at 1955 Julian Ave in Logan Heights. Byers will sample his playing live via laptop and integrate the samples back into the mix. Concert begins at 8 pm. Tickets are $15. Or...

Gilbert Castellanos Trio

The trumpeter performs at the Westgate Hotel in the Plaza Bar with guitarist Graham Dechter and bassist Katie Thiroux. This room only seats about 30 people and the sound is gorgeous. Arrive early for best results. No cover, $20 food/drink minimum.

Sept. 14, Steph Johnson Trio

The soulful vocalist will be performing at a special "house-concert" in the Old Town area with bassist Rob Thorsen and drummer Fernando Gomez at 5 pm. Suggested donation is $15. You can reserve tickets by sending your particulars to [email protected] You can then run to P.B. to catch:

JazzMikan- "Shades of Light"

Pianist Mikan Zlatkovich leads a San Diego supergroup featuring tenor saxophonist Daniel Jackson, flutist Lori Bell, violinist Jamie Shadowlight, bassist Bill Andrews and drummer Duncan Moore at Dizzy's. Concert time 8 pm. Tickets $15.
