Lori Bell's Fourth Friday Jazz Series Set For La Jolla Community Center

Flutist Lori Bell hosts a series of jazz concerts at the La Jolla Community Center with guests including guitarist Peter Sprague as well as pianists Dave Mackay and Grant Levin

The Fourth Friday Jazz Series will take place every month through November at the La Jolla Community Center. With a capacity for 100 attendees, each show in the series features a performance from Bonita-based flutist Lori Bell, accompanied by guest artists and a custom set list for each show.

On September 27 she’ll be joined by guitarist Peter Sprague and bassist Bob Magnusson. This show will highlight the works of jazz guitarists. In addition to originals from both Bell and Sprague, concert goers can look forward to hearing songs by the likes of Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny and Ralph Towner.

October 25 will see Bell perform alongside Bay Area pianist Grant Levin, with bassist Bob Magnusson back for this show. This concert will include a spotlight on the music of the pianist Cedar Walton and saxophonist Joe Henderson.

Finally, November 22 will feature a reunion of Bell’s group, Interplay, which includes pianist Dave Mackay and Ron Satterfield. “We will be playing music from the two CD’s we made, including our ‘Wizard of Oz’ medley,” she said. It was as a member of the Dave Mackay Trio that Bell released her first recordings in 1983.

Tickets for the concerts are $20 in advance, $25 at the door and come with appetizers and glass of wine.

Though best known for her flute playing, Bell actually began her musical career as a guitarist. “I started on guitar at four and played seriously until I was sixteen,” she recalled. “Then a wind player friend of my fathers, Richard Swink, came back from a tour and brought a flute home. I was over there playing him some originals on guitar. The flute wound up in my hands and never left.”

Bell’s hasn’t released a new album since 2008’s The Music of Djavan, but she confirms that a new disc is in the works. “My latest CD is a classical project featuring 20th Century repertoire for flute and piano. I’m looking at a release either at the end of this year or the beginning of 2014,” she said.
