As usual, there's a lot of jazz coming up this week, but I want to alert fans of the music to two concerts in particular:
Oct. 9- The Dave Douglas Quintet, Athenaeum Jazz at TSRI
Unlike so many of the trumpeters who have come along since Wynton Marsalis hit the scene, Douglas is doing something entirely his own. It has taken him awhile to achieve notoriety via high positioning in critics polls and the like, but Douglas is the real deal. It is refreshing to hear a top trumpeter who acknowledges the influences of Don Cherry and Lester Bowie as being important in the same way that Clifford Brown and Miles Davis are.
I'm just as excited to see Douglas' band, which feature fast-rising NYC talent like tenor saxophonist Jon Irabagon, pianist Bobby Avey, bassist Linda Oh and drummer Rudy Royston.
TSRI is located at 10640 John Jay Hopkins Dr. in La Jolla. Tickets are $35 general public and $30 for Athenaeum members. Concert begins at 8 pm.
Oct. 12- San Diego Center for the Arts presents Double Duos
This performance will feature two woodwind & drum duos. David Borgo will join Jeanette Kangas in a tribute to the legendary drummer Ed Blackwell. Multi-instrumentalist Vinny Golia partners with drummer Nathan Hubbard for what is sure to be a blistering set of exchanges. Golia is an improviser on the level of Anthony Braxton and Roscoe Mitchell, and anytime he makes the trek from Los Angeles to our town is cause for a celebration.
I'm expecting sparks to fly.
The concert will be held at Villa Musica, located at 10373 Roselle St. Suite 170, in Sorrento Valley. Tickets are $15, and the concert begins at 8 pm.
