Coastral: Ocean Bound EP

Tijuana/San Diego beats and bliss producer is a three-day weekend in your earballs.

On his recent debut Ocean Bound EP (free download), San Diego/Tijuana chillout producer Coastral retells some of nature’s classic narratives – the sun setting over the sea, the dawn of a new day, the churning depths of the deep - in a make believe language of breezy beats and shimmering synths.

“[Each of the five tracks] tell a different little story or capture a moment in my life, and I wanted to give those memories back to all of my people who have supported my musical journey so far,” Coastral aka Alejandro Arredondo writes.

Opening track “Marina Kites,” for example, was inspired by an afternoon at the Embarcadero.

“It was a warm sunny day in San Diego,” Arredondo recalls.

“I was taking the trolley back to San Ysidro like any other day, only this time I decided to go north. I ended up at 12th & Imperial and began walking towards the harbor and eventually ended up in this little park area. There were people flying kites and enjoying their day, and I wanted to capture that moment of being in that park, free of stress, and routine free. Just me and the kites, flying in the sky.”

Likewise, closer “Farewell Sun” remembers a sunset viewed from Pacific Beach, of which Arredondo writes:

“It was the first time I sat through an entire sunset by myself, just reflecting on my life and goals. This one was made so you may think a similar thought pattern.”

Deliberate yet fluid, Ocean Bound is equally at home in a morning yoga sesh or a late-night kick back with friends.

It is both a diary and a guide.

Slip on some headphones, crank up the bass, and spend a day at the beach with shore shaman Coastral.
