Bonnie Wright closes out her Spring String Theory concert series with a bang on May 14 by way of a special appearance by Chicago guitar hero Jeff Parker's trio, featuring bassist Chris Lopes and drummer Chad Taylor.
These three have a history, dating back to 1985, when Parker and Lopes met as students at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 1988, they teamed up with Taylor and the trio was created.
Parker's music balances the free-improvising aesthetic with a remarkably tuneful and accessible approach, his last visit to San Diego with the Ben Goldberg Trio exemplified his patient commitment to exploratory principles and really whetted my appetite for this upcoming show under his own leadership.
Wright's Fresh Sound @ Space 4 Art has been on a tear so far this year, with dynamo shows by Han Bennink, Erik Duetsch, Larry Ochs & Don Robinson, Gyan Riley and now, the Parker Trio. She's taking the summer off, so this represents your last chance to get your ears stretched and mind blown until September.
Space 4 Art is located at 325 15th, between J & K, in the East Village. Tickets are $15 general public and $ 10 for students. Concert begins at 8 pm.
