Internationally acclaimed pianist Jason Moran returns to San Diego May 8, at TSRI under the auspices of Athenaeum Jazz, produced by Dan Atkinson.
Moran will be leading his longstanding trio The Bandwagon featuring bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits.
The pianist has a fine pedigree, having studied with ex-Mingus sideman Jaki Byard, and icons Andrew Hill and Muhal Richard Abrams, as well as a c.v. that includes work with Greg Osby, Ravi Coltrane and Charles Lloyd.
"I have been aware of Jason's importance to the music scene since at least 2004," says Atkinson. "Which is when he first played on the Athenaeum series as a part of [clarinetist] Don Byron's Ivey Divey Trio ( a tribute band to Lester Young). Jason returned to the series in 2008 as a part of the Charles Lloyd Quartet. It was a phenomenal evening for both the audience and the band that merited mention in a feature piece on Charles that appeared several years later in Jazz Times."
Adventurous, but highly accessible, Moran's performance should interest anyone curious about the state of the art in modern piano playing. This is a rare opportunity to catch a master trio in a acoustically pristine environment.
TSRI is located at 10640 John Jay Hopkins Dr. Concert begins at 8 pm. Tickets are $32 for Athenaeum members, $37 for the general public.
