It’s the end of an era for San Diego’s most eclectic underground electronic, experimental, and world music venue as manager Mateo Silva departs after eight years at the Kava Lounge.
Anyone who’s spent time at this Middletown organic cocktail bar and nightclub has no doubt been greeted by the sight of Mateo and his majestic hair-do behind the bar, at the turntables, or working the door, and, as any regular can tell you, his role as a booker and organizer was pivotal in creating the venue’s close-knit community.
Mateo told CityBeat (who broke the story last week) that he plans to re-focus on energy work and holistic healing.
“I’ve been studying and practicing various bodywork and energy modalities for years,” Mateo, an alumnus of Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, tells the Reader.
“It’s just time to move on and again, focus my time and energy on my own projects: my holistic studies and practice, music, rise with the sun, bed at reasonable hours…”
Mateo maintains that he’s not “in the bar business,” but rather, his love for music lead him to the Kava Lounge.
That much is apparent by his monthly Family Matters conclave, an invite-only hob-nob “for the heads in SD trying to push their own personal experiments into the cosmos. Producers only - sharing new tracks, testing levels on a proper sound system, getting feedback from peers, forming new collaborations, etc.”
On Friday, May 3, you are invited to a farewell Family Matters beat showcase to see Mateo off and check out the venue under the new ownership of Mike Bremer, better known as Tattoo Mike of Chronic Tattoo & Body Piercing in Mission Beach, and his business partner and local DJ, Scott Bell.
Godspeed, Mateo! If the past near-decade is any indicator, you will stomp some serious terra at whatever comes next.
