Mutts of the Planet is the exceptional repertory group led by songbird Robin Adler and Blackburn, devoted to the music of Joni Mitchell. The personnel varies according to what period of Mitchell's career they are interpreting, this time it is the pre-Court & Spark era--namely Song to a Seagull, Clouds, Ladies of the Canyon and For The Roses--and will feature Barnaby Finch on piano, Peggy Watson on vocals/guitar, Barry Cahill on vocals/saxophone/flute, and Danny Campbell on drums.
All of this will be going down at the New Dizzy's in Pacific Beach at 8 pm. Tickets are $20.
I have seen Mutts of the Planet several times in recent years and have been floored by their aesthetic every time. Mitchell's music is the product of a visionary-- a genius of the highest order, and what this band does with that music is nothing short of amazing.
"Her first three albums will provide the tunes for our first set, including the chilling a capella commentary on US militarism, The Fiddle and the Drum and the modal austerity of her first recording of Woodstock," Blackburn said. "The second set will be a complete performance of For The Roses, an emotionally dark and very transitional record that saw a massive leap in her compositional sophistication from Blue."
