Bonnie Wright's Fresh Sound @ Space 4 Art concludes this month with a bang by virtue of a performance from the Rez Abbasi Trio on March 31, at 8 pm.
Abbasi won #2 Rising Star Guitarist in the Down Beat magazine 2012 poll, and his latest release Continuous Beat has earned rave reviews from just about every jazz publication. On a personal level--I can testify that Continuous Beat stayed in my CD player for months--it's that good.
The guitarist has created a unique improvising voice that incorporates influences like Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell as well as music reflective of his Pakistani heritage into a singular aesthetic. He will be joined by his longtime NYC associate Satoshi Takeishi on drums and Mark Dresser, the San Diego contrabass virtuoso.
"I first heard Rez last November at the Miller Theater in NY," says Wright. "He was performing with Rudresh Mahanthappa's Indo-Pak Coalition. I was dazzled by the trio and with Rez's performance, and was thrilled to learn that he would be on a West Coast tour this March, and, hence, able to come and perform for Fresh Sound in San Diego."
Space 4 Art is located at 325 15th, between J & K. Tickets are $15- general admission, $10 students with ID.
