Mariachi at San Diego Opera

Legendary Mariachi performs original opera at Civic Theater.

Cruzar la cara de la luna--To cross the face of the moon--the first Mariachi Opera.

“Yes I’m going, that’s the best Mariachi band in the world!”, said the opera-singing soprano with a master’s degree in vocal pedagogy.

Was I surprised? I was surprised to learn that there is an undisputed best Mariachi band in the world.

Who is the best Mariachi in the world? Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán.

This Mariachi was founded in the town of Tecalitlán in 1897 and the current group of musicians is formally the fifth generation.

Why am I bringing it up? There are two performances of Cruzar la cara de la luna on Saturday, March 16th at the Civic Theater. There is a 2 pm matinee and a 7 pm evening performance.

I must be somewhat nit-picky with Cruzar's claim to be a Mariachi opera. The singers use microphones and that is not a part of opera. The end, no discussion. It would be more accurate to call this musical theater.

That being said, Cruzar has been a hit with audiences and critics in both Paris and Houston.

The event is sponsored by San Diego Opera.
