While I have failed to keep my New Year’s resolution of listening to a new piece of music everyday, I have bumped into some quality pieces in the attempt.
Recently an Austrian composer named Alexander von Zemlinsky has been occupying my listenings.
I don’t know why Zemlinsky isn’t better known. His music is great. He was well connected with both Brahms and Mahler championing his music in the early 20th Century. His brother-in-law was Arnold Schoenberg.
Zemlinsky’s most popular work is supposed to be his Lyric Symphony which is a seven part symphony written for soprano, baritone, and orchestra.
I've been enjoying his lesser known opera Eine florentinische tragodie, A Florentine Tragedy. The piece is a one act affair. Prince Guido is having an affair with Bianca, the wife of a merchant named Simone. I’m loving those character names.
Ultimately Simon loses it and strangles Guido to death. Bianca is wet with admiration for Simon’s strength and the two are reconciled as the curtain goes down at the conclusion of the show.
Who doesn't want to strangle someone named Guido?
