The Calder Quartet came together at USC and stayed together through grad school at the Colburn Conservatory and the Juilliard School.
The quartet has a strong connection to the traditional form of string quartet but keep themselves firmly rooted in the present by maintaining relationships with contemporary composers such as Christopher Rouse, Thomas Ades, and Christine Southworth.
The Calder Quartet will be performing at the Conrad Prebys concert hall at UCSD on Thursday the 7th at 8:00 pm. They will also be at The Loft on Friday the 8th at 8:00 pm.
These concerts appear to encapsulate the Calder approach. They start with Beethoven move to Thomas Ades, and conclude with Bartok. That is to say they start with the traditional, move to the contemporary and conclude with a modern classic.
I also love the Calder Quartet website. It’s contemporary and elegant and well thought out. Typical.
