The ShakeDown Bar welcomes Anilee Griffin to the driver's seat

Former Flying Elephant manager takes over at Midway rock and roll dive

Infamous for their emphasis on “Booze, Bikes, Bands, Broads, and Rods,” The ShakeDown Bar on Midway is changing hands about two-and-a-half years into its Loma Portal legacy.

The rowdy venue, perhaps best known for its high-energy punk shows and tall cans of malt liquor, is welcoming former Flying Elephant (850 Tamarack Ave. - Carlsbad) booker/manager Anilee Griffin to the helm.

“For the North County native, taking over The ShakeDown is nothing short of a dream come true,” the bar writes on their website.

“And with fourteen years in the bar industry and six years in the music industry (as the head of BossLady Booking), Anilee is well-prepared to blow the roof off the local rock n' roll scene.”

Check out these upcoming shows and welcome Anilee on June 15 at the grand reopening party:

CHRIST KILLER

Tickets

DOORS: 8 PM / SHOW: 9 PM

VICIOUS CIRCLE: Since the 1980s Vicious Circle (VC) has been a main stay of the Australian Hard-core movement. The band formed in Melbourne in 1983 and was quickly established within the cities scene. VC has appeared on literally hundreds of compilations worldwide and released multiple albums, EPs and singles during the bands 30 year tenure.

PSYCHOSOMATIC: From the depths of Sacramento California the crossover thrash metal, punk rock band PSYCHOSOMATIC was twisted into form in 1988 spewing forth chaotic blasts of jackhammer style guitar picking on top of super tight speed drumming with ripping fast bass guitar lines and ferocious vocals spitting out lyrical topics ranging from anti establishment social issues to horror and insanity. The Sacto thrashers barrage listeners with fast, tight, punk style energy songs into the technical darkness of metal. Psychosomatic has carved their trench in the underground thrash metal world with several US tours, leaving blistered eardrums in their wake. Psychosomatic has four full-length releases to date including 2006’s Unquenchable Thirst and 2010’s Another Disease along with two Video cuts, “Another Disease” and “Everybody Hates Me” featuring guest singer Nickie Sickie from Verbal Abuse. Psychosomatic also has several tracks on various compilations such as, Thrasher Magazine’s Skate Rock vol 9, Shred or be Shredded on Buried in Hell Records and Econo-Comp on Recordsontap.

GRAVEYARD JOHNNYS are an up-and-coming Punkabilly band from the UK who are making a lot of noise. They are splitting the June 2013 Nekromantix tour with The Silver Shine as direct support. From the deepest, darkest depths of South Wales in the UK, The Graveyard Johnnys have devised a recipe that somehow transforms something stale into something fresh. Bored to death by bands sounding and looking like something from 50 years ago, The Johnnys are digging up that rotten old corpse, slappin it around a bit and injecting it with some life so it can survive in the 21st century. In this band there is absolutely no bullshit, just straight up, balls out, good time rock and fucking roll. Watch your backs...

WRECKIN KATZ are a high-energy Psychobilly band who put on a great live show. They have toured a few times and will be a great match to Graveyard Johnnys as both bands have the same rock-n-roll energy, but with different styles.

$10

Tickets

DOORS: 9 PM / SHOW: 10 PM

the LORDS OF ALTAMONT: It’s been over a decade since the Lords Of Altamont ferociously emerged from the depths of the Los Angeles garage scene. Evoking the feeling of psychedelic influenced, 60’s biker mayhem, their collective black hair, greasy boot-cut jeans, and custom denim jackets have always given them a “we’ve come for your daughters” presence, but it’s their ultra cool delivery of loud, steady, garage punk that has set them apart from the pack. Several personnel changes later, Jake ‘The Preacher’ Cavaliere, Shawn ‘Sonic’ Medina, John ‘Big Drag’ Saletra, plus new addition Harry ‘Full Tilt’ Drumdini (formerly of punk legends The Cramps) return with the perfect lineup.

the DEVEREAUX: Brand new Punk n Roll band from Orange County taking their name in tribute to sextress Blanche Deveraux of the TV show, the Golden Girls. No spring chickens on the scene, this band features members of ADHD, the Copouts, etc.

EMBALMERS are a meld of Garage, Punk, Rockabilly and Psycho. A little bit of Hasil Adkins, Roky Erickson & The Cramps a la EMBALMERS. EMBALMERS are krypt keepers living on the beach, a B-episode of The Munsters meet The Trashmen for a ghoulish day of surfing, partying and debauchery. If jazzy riffs and synchronized jump moves combined with a degree from The Juliard School of Music is what you desire? then this is definately not the band for you, but if you're looking for a good old fashion down the middle fun time! Dancing, hooting and shaking what Yo momma gave you, then this is the band for you! so sit back! smile! enjoy a few stiff drinks with some friends and loved ones! and Please!!!! enjoy the show!!!!! SHAKEDOWN GRAND REOPENING WITH

NIHILIST

DPI

the RED DEVIL SQUADRON

the GREAT ELECTRIC QUEST

FREE SHOW!

NOON TIL THE WHEELS FALL OFF!

NIHILIST: In the spring of 2003 Nihilist evolved into a metal trio forgetting everything and everyone left behind; to create a new aggressive sound of metal that you’ll hear today. “By the time finals had begun I was smiling because I had just been treated to a blistering taste of metal provided by north county San Diego’s very own Nihilist.”(automatic magazine). Mixing metal, thrash, and good old skool rock’n roll, this original blend of high energy music gets you out of your seat, banging your head and pumping your fist.“The three peice wins the why are you playing in this little bar when you should be playing with big metal acts award.” (Zakk Jones powerslave.com). All three members grew up in the same town, went to the same high school, and resided in the same nieghborhoods. It’s only fitting that they would come to gather to create a wirlwind of metal known as Nihilist. Nihilist is: Loren Tipton-Bass/Vocals,”What makes this band is Loren Tipton just wait till you hear him growl.” (Troy Johnson FoxRox). Joe Walker-Lead Guitar,”The leads are quick, captivating and filled a metal thirst” (Zakk Jones). Sean Elg-Drums,”Drummer Sean Elg must have sold his soul to satan to play like he does.” (Zakk Jones). Taking their home town by storm, it’s only a matter of time tilll they take yours. They pride themselves on their air tight performances and their skull crushing originals. “The musicianship is lock step assault.”(Troy Johnson). The band agrees that practice is not an option it’s an addiction, and metal isn’t a form of music it’s a religion. Next time you hear the fans screaming Nihilist, take cover. Cause when the bomb drops there will be nowhere to hide, and when the sound hits the crowd, the chaos ignites.

DPI play a highly dynamic and aggressive style of punk rock. The aftermath of a typical DPI show is much like the remnants of a barroom brawl: Punks of all ages dripping of blood and sweat as they make their way through broken glass and beer-soaked floors. DPI has managed to revive a sound reminiscent of early-80's punk. Imagine the raw power of “early” Black Flag, Adolescents and RKL rising up to give today's generation a hard kick in the ass. No one is as true to form. This quintet's presence and songwriting talents remain unmatched by their contemporaries. Having survived the latest SXSW (South by Southwest) bash and the release of their 2013 LP Smashed, DPI is ready to pump out the soundtrack for the next party.

the RED DEVIL SQUADRON are blasting a path across the music landscape of Southern California and beyond. Hailing from south Orange County, these gents wear their allegiance to the swashbuckling lifestyle on their sleeves and take no prisoners! With a sound best described as dirty blues based punk 'n' roll with a swagger straight from the high seas.

the GREAT ELECTRIC QUEST have that 70's boogie Rock n Roll vibe cruisin' on in.
