The final concert of La Jolla Symphony’s season is this weekend at Mandeville Auditorium on the campus of UCSD. There are two concerts. One on Saturday, the 8th of June at 7:30 pm and one on Sunday, the 9th of June at 2:00 pm.
At a distant point in time this would have been an avant garde concert with music by Britten, Schoenberg, and Vaughan Williams.
Now this is just a concert full of great music. The Schoenberg piece is beautiful and introspective. Whereas the Vaughan Williams is a herd of thundering mammoth.
Well, the Vaughan Williams is more than that. The piece La Jolla is performing is Dona nobis pacem. Vaughan Williams intersperses the latin text with poetry from the American Civil War by Walt Whitman.
This is an amazing piece of music and I’m excited to hear it.
