Drawing inspiration from the Son Jarocho folk tradition pioneered by Mexican luminaries such as Doña Elena Ramírez, Don Arcadio Hidalgo, and Don Andrés Vega, Sonex combines indigenous sounds from their hometown of Xalapa, Veracruz with African rhythms, Afro-Peruvian music, Venezuelan jams, Flamenco, salsa, and a tactful smattering of blues, jazz, funk, hip-hop, rock, and reggae.

Their uninhibited, progressive world tune "Sobre tus Aguas" won them the “Tu música también cuenta - Día de la Tierra" contest put on by the National Geographic Channel a while back in commemoration of Earth Day.
On Tuesday, July 23, Sonex grooves through town with a 7 p.m. show at the Voz Alta Project gallery (1754 National Avenue – Barrio Logan) alongside local jammers Afrojazziacs.
