"I'm a total Star Wars nerd," admits local trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos, who is planning an extravagant "Jazz meets Star Wars," concert series this weekend in celebration of Comic-Con coming to town.
On Friday, July 19, Castellanos, with tenor saxophonist Brian Levy, violinist Jamie Shadowlight, pianist Joshua White and the LA rhythm section of bassist Hamilton Price and drummer Dan Schnelle will perform one show at the all-ages Dizzy's (4275 Mission Bay Dr.).
On July 20, the same personnel will be doing the Star Wars tribute at (21+), 98 Bottles (2400 Kettner Blvd), with shows at 8 and 10 pm. Pre-sale tickets for the 98 Bottles performances are going fast.
"I've been working my butt off writing complicated arrangements on these tunes from all six movies," says Castellanos. I've also asked Brian and Dan to contribute, although I've done about 70% of the arrangements covering the most popular tunes.
"But I'm stoked by the whole concept. I've been contacted by a bunch of people coming in from other states, and they all seem excited too." Images from the Star Wars series will be part of each concert via the use of two large projectors, and rumor has it that at least two members of the band will be performing in costume.
"Yeah, I'm going to be dressed as Luke Skywalker and Jamie's going as Princess Leia," says Castellanos. "I don't know if I can get any other band members to dress up, though."
Tickets for the 98 Bottles shows can be pre-ordered at http://starwars.bpt.me
