A Tale of Two Interrobangs

Proggy instrumental quarter celebrates sophomore album at Tin Can Ale House in Bankers Hill.

Not unlike the archaic piece of punctuation from which they take their name, Interrobang invites both excitement and intrigue on their second full-length, A Tale of Two Interrobangs.

The instrumental quartet (make click here to read about a house party they threw a few years back) takes cues from prog-rock, video games, gypsy jams, and maybe even a few Meco hits on their 6-song LP, to dizzying and delightful ends.

The gothic acid western saga of “Dogfight” opens the album with blaring trumpets, macabre organ, and a schizoid circus breakdown before giving way to “Five,” a whimsical post-rock number (one recalls the spacious melodies of Tortoise or Tristeza) in 5/4.

“Crack Mode” adds an almost industrial, 8-bit edge to the mathematical quandary followed by “Waltz,” a cinematic three-count that invokes imagery of French girls on bicycles.

“Mystery” takes a turn for the sinister while “Kevin Spacey” closes the album with dazzling, cosmic synths and soaring, Fripp-y guitar leads.

Celebrate the wham-wow of Interrobang on Wednesday, July 10 at Tin Can Ale House (1863 5th Avenue – Bankers Hill) where they’ll be hooking up with Kissing Party and Mandarin Dynasty. Five clams.

Now what can they do with Encinitas unstable cliffs?

Make the cliffs fall, put up more warnings, fine beachgoers?
