Hills Like Elephants released a new single a few days ago titled “Note to Self,” adding a post-punk edge to their soulful “Motown with drum machines” sound.
Produced by Mike Butler at vintage-ready Lost Ark Studio in Pacific Beach, “Note to Self” will be featured on the studio's Lost Ark Studio Compilation - Vol. 04.
From Lost Ark’s Soundcloud page:
“When we saw them take the stage at the 2012 San Diego Music Awards we knew we wanted them in on the studio's compilation series - take a listen and you'll know why - unique sound, and really great guys as well, glad to share this one with you....”
Hills Like Elephants’ sophomore LP, Feral Flocks, is due to drop via Requiemme Records/BMG Chrysalis in March.
The title comes from a prerecorded zoo segment that frontman Sean Davenport overheard while interviewing with FM 94/9 host Tim Pyles and refers to lost birds of prey forming feral flocks to migrate home.
There’s a metaphor in there somewhere, Davenport told The Reader in December, disclaiming: “I’m not trying to be profound. Like, if I wouldn’t say it to you at a bar, I won’t say it lyrically. I’m not going to start spouting poetry.”
Davenport says Feral Flocks strikes an upbeat contrast to the laments of his debut.
“On The Endless Charade I was harping on the idea of past relationships, but I was also trying to move on,” Davenport says. “Feral Flocks is more about noticing the subtleties of life.”
