USD will host an evening of cutting edge jazz on Jan. 17, a double-bill concert that features former San Diegan Scott Walton in both ensembles.
At 7 pm, the Christopher Adler Trio opens, featuring Adler on piano with Walton on bass and Nathan Hubbard on drums.
"I first heard Chris sometime in the late '90's when he moved to town," says Hubbard. "We've played many gigs together and he's also been the conductor for my large ensemble, Skeleton Key Orchestra. Chris is an amazing pianist and composer, I just recently heard him perform a piece by John Cage at Palomar College and was struck by what a great performer he is."
The first set will also represent a reunion of sorts, (partial at least), Walton and Hubbard comprised the rhythm section for Cosmologic, an SD free-jazz supergroup that also featured trombonist Michael Dessen and saxophone firebrand Jason Robinson, which sadly disbanded last year.
"Cosmologic represented some 12 years of rehearsing performing and touring," says Hubbard. "Beyond that, Scott and I have played a ton of ad hoc improvisation gigs."
According to Walton, the Adler trio will engage in "Total spontaneously improvised music. Nathan will bring a 'junk-kit' (stripped down drumset) and we're just gonna play".
At 8 pm. an ultra-rare opportunity to catch on of the heaviest West-Coast trombonists unfolds, when the Michael Vlakovitch Quartet headlines.
"We'll be playing all Michael's compositions," says Walton. "Which are extremely poly-rhythmically challenging. We've been playing as a quartet for about two years now, and we're just coming off some gigs in the Bay Area and LA, getting ready for a recording date in March."
The Vlatkovich Quartet also features electric guitarist Tom McNally and percussionist Garth Powell, who both have deep improvising credentials.
"Michael's tunes run the gamut," explained Walton. "From very spatial, textural kinds of things to real gutbucket to Ornette Coleman grooves."
Anyone into adventurous music cannot afford to miss this one. Best of all, it's free admission!
Concert is located at University of San Diego, Camino Hall, room 153.
