"The idea behind this series was to provide an additional venue for local musicians to perform music of their own choosing," says guitarist Nate Jarrell of the San Diego Center for the Arts, an organization founded by drummer Jeanette Kangas, presenting concerts in association with Nathan Hubbard and the Trummerflora Collective in 2009. Jarrell came on board last year.
The organization kicks off this year's series on January 12, with the Steve Swallow/ Carla Bley Tribute at Villa Musica in the Sorrento Valley area.
Bley is one of the most distinctive composers in all of jazz, whose songs have been covered by dozens of artists, and Swallow's career as an acoustic, then electric, bassist and composer includes work with Jimmy Guiffre, Stan Getz, Chick Corea and Gary Burton.
Jarrell is excited about the concert and the venue, which he describes as " a small space--seats about 50 people with a nice acoustic piano."
The band will feature tenor saxophonist Peter August, pianist Rick Helzer, bassist Harley Magsino, (who will focus on electric for most of the night), in addition to Jarrell and Kangas.
"We're going to be doing a lot of the more obscure work from Bley and Swallow," promises Jarrell. "Stuff you don't find in The Real Book."
Villa Musica is located at 10373 Roselle St., Suite 170. Tickets are $15 and can be reserved at 619 261-8948.
A student band will be performing in the lobby, pre-concert.
