The Mendelssohn Violin Concerto is coming up this weekend at the San Diego Symphony. This concerto is one of the most popular in the violin repertoire.
The piece took Mendelssohn six years to complete. There were extenuating circumstances, such as a series of broken promises from the Prussian Kaiser, but there is no known reason as to why it took Mendelssohn so to finish his violin concerto.
The concerto was unique at the time and disposed several classical conventions regarding the concerto form. The two items that are most obvious are the solo instrument introducing the main theme in the first movement and all three movements being played without pausing between each.
Novelties aside, it is the quality and sentiment of the music that has sustained this concertos popularity over the years.
The concerts are Friday the 11th and Saturday the 12th at 8:00 pm and Sunday the 13th at 2:00 pm and will be held in Symphony Hall.
