Concert promoter Bonnie Wright kicks off her cutting-edge music series Fresh Sound this week with a bang, bringing the Dutch drumming legend Han Bennink to San Diego with violinist/violist Mary Oliver and our own contrabass virtuoso Mark Dresser on Jan. 10.
This group, (with the addition of trombonist Michael Dessen), delivered a rapturous set last year at the Neurosciences Institute, one of the highlight events of 2012.
This trio figures to make for a fascinating event. Oliver is one of the most compelling string players I've heard, she and Dresser combined last time for some serious textures and I love her solo concepts as well.
Bennink is the drummer on Eric Dolphy's Last Date album, recorded in 1964. Since then, he has been a pioneer in the European free jazz community, collaborating with a who's who of adventurous musicians like pianist Misha Mengelberg, saxophonist Peter Brotzmann, trumpeter Don Cherry and guitarist Derek Bailey, to name just a few.
He is also a master of staightahead jazz styles, having accompanied many major American jazz artists touring Europe in the 1960's like Wes Montgomery and Sonny Rollins.
Watching Bennink perform is a multimedia kind of experience. In addition to his wide absorption of virtually every style of music, there is a wicked comedic component to his playing that must be experienced to be believed. Bennink will play on virtually any surface available, and whether he's striking the floor, or a stick in his mouth, the results are always swinging.
The concert will be held at Space4Art, in the East Village, at 325 15th St. between "J" & "K." Tickets are $ 15. Start time: 8 pm.
