Rudresh Mahanthappa & Gamak live in University Heights, March 3

Mahanthappa has an instantly identifiable sound, and his band is full of ringers.

Sunday, March 3, figures to be a noteworthy day in the San Diego jazz-concert landscape for 2013. Daniel Atkinson, the jazz-program-coordinator for Athenaeum Jazz brings alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa to Jazz at the Studio, located at 4441 Park Blvd. in University Heights.

Mahanthappa will be leading his latest group, Gamak, comprised of NYC heavyweights David Fiucynski on fretted/fretless electric guitars, Francois Moutin on double-bass, and Dan Weiss on drums.

This group represents a heady fusion of Mahanthappa's South Indian roots, free-jazz, and funk in odd meters. Their latest album has garnered tons of positive reviews and my expectations could not be higher.

Mahanthappa and Fiucynski or both member's of legendary drummer Jack DeJohnette's current band, Moutin is an extraordinary bass virtuoso in the Gary Peacock/ Eddie Gomez continuum who was last in San Diego with French pianist Jean-Michel Pilc. Weiss, one NYC's top drummer's, was recently seen in town as a member of trombone virtuoso Michael Dessen's Trio.

"Hard to beat a combination like this," says Atkinson. "On a personal note, I came to jazz originally through listening to Indian classical music, so the connection between these two great traditions of improvisation has always been important to me. Rudresh takes this connection to new and exciting places."

Jazz at the Studio is one of my all-time favorite San Diego venues. It has an elevated stage, terrific acoustics and a superb sound-system. It holds about 180 people, so early arrival or reservations are encouraged. Tickets are $26 general public and $21 for Athenaeum members. For reservations call: (858) 454-5872. Concert begins at 8 p.m.
