Ruff Draft 2: Art and music inspired by hip hop legend J Dilla

Andre Power hosts opening at Zion Lounge in College Area

The career of Detroit hip hop producer James ‘J Dilla’ Yancey was tragically cut short in 2006 when the 32-year-old visionary passed away from a rare blood disorder.

Dewitt’s legacy (which included work with A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, The Roots, and Janet Jackson) was so pronounced that, today, a multifaceted genre of instrumental hip hop-based beats is often referred to as “post-Dilla.”

“His music has inspired many musicians and even visual artists like myself to create, constantly disregarding status quo,” writes Andre Power, the promoter behind Ruff Draft 2: An Artistic Tribute to the Legendary J Dilla.

The Saturday, February 16 opening at Zion Lounge (6193 University Ave – College Area) comes two years after Power’s inaugural Ruff Draft.
