Turns out there are even more worthwhile gigs to attend in these first two weeks of February than I originally posted. Here are some important additions.
Feb. 7
San Diego's most creative drummer, Nathan Hubbard will present Along Came A Spider this Thursday night at 98 Bottles. Hubbard has assembled a brand-new quartet featuring saxophonists David Borgo and Ian Tordella with MVP bassist Rob Thorsen to explore old and new compositions.
"We've all played together a lot over the years," says Hubbard. "But we've never played all together in this lineup, so this should be fun."
Hubbard is always involved in adventurous music for his myriad ensembles--but this one seems to be especially potent. "This is the first time I have delved into my back catalog of pieces, the majority of what we're playing hasn't been performed in 9 to 10 years."
Tickets are available online for $8 until midnight PST Wednesday at http://nhub.bpt.me/
Concert is at 8 pm. Tickets are $10 at the door.
Feb. 8
LA jazz pianist (and former music director for David Bowie), Mike Garson performs at the new Dizzy's (4275 Mission Bay Drive) with local flute virtuoso Lori Bell, bass heavyweight Bob Magnusson and first-call drummer Duncan Moore. I'm looking forward to hearing Garson exploit the nuances of the grand piano, and really, you can't ask for a better band.
Feb. 9
Pianist extraordinaire Mikan Zlatkovich returns to the new Dizzy's with Mikan Trio + 3, on Saturday evening featuring the electric bass of Dave Curtis, the flute of Lori Bell, drums of Duncan Moore, voice of Allison Adams Tucker and the soulful violin of Jamie Shadowlight.
This group always delivers modern music with an emphasis on stuff that is rarely played in our town. Zlatkovich is a master interpreter with an exquisite touch.
