The Super Bowl is over.
Having been born in the Bay Area and having gone to high school near the Bay Area, needless to say I wanted the Niners to win the Super Bowl. I’m a left-coaster and prefer any California team to one from the misery-laden East Coast.
It should be disclosed that the Ravens’ team mascot is a reference to Edgar Allan Poe. Whereas the 49er’s were historically cut throat drunks — kind of like that team from the other side of the Bay.
This might be a stretch but I’m going to try it anyway.
Being a 49er’s fan this season was kind of like being Paul in Korngold’s Die Tote Stadt without the ball busting aria at the end.
In Die Tote Stadt Paul’s wife, Marie, has died and he is in what could be called denial. Paul maintains a “Temple of Memories” to Marie, including a lock of her hair.
Paul’s friend, Frank, stops by, tells Paul to get on with his life and brings him a new girl to fall in love with. The new girl strongly resembles Marie but is younger and is also a seductive dancer.
Her name is Marietta.
Marietta dances for Paul but finds him to be boring so she takes off. Paul then has a series of day dreams or illusions or psychotic episodes in which he pursues Marietta at the recommendation of Marie’s ghost.
His life--in the illusions--sucks.
In the real world Marietta returns for an umbrella she had forgotten to take with her. Paul can still taste his psychotic-crap-life and decides to leave town and leave his temple of memories and get on with living life “for reals”.
In this comparison, 49er’s quarterback Alex Smith is Marie. I know he’s from San Diego but as a Niner he’s dead. However, we can still feel some obligation to honor his memory.
Of course Colin Kaepernick is the dancer Marietta. He’s young and flashy and can dance down the field like a gazelle. I’m not sure Kaepernick would dance for any fans the way Marietta danced for Paul.
The point is that Niners lost so it’s time to get on with living life “for reals”.
