The first two weeks of February are literally jam-packed with jazz opportunities, and a few unfortunate conflicts as well.
Feb. 1
Gilbert Castellanoscontinues his series at the Westgate Hotel, this month featuring collaborations with world-class guitarists. Fittingly, the celebration begins with Peter Sprague manning the double-neck, and Rob Thorsen bringing in the low-end.
Or, if the Latin sound is more your thing, head to Dizzy's for Bill Caballeros Bi-National Mambo Orchestra, featuring a massive unit with Caballeros, Steve Ebner, Paul Seaforth and Jack Kauten on trumpets, Dan Regen, Jordan Morita, Rob Clark and April West on trombones, Dick McGuane, Jesse Abuelo, Bob Campbell, Mike Carnahan and Chris Lea on saxophones, Irving Flores on piano, Fred Ubaldo Jr. on bass, Charlie Chavez on timbales and Ray Gonzalez on congas.
Feb 2
Tribute to Monk with Gilbert Castellanos, pianist Joshua White, bassist Katie Thiroux and drummer Dan Schenelle at 98 Bottles. Or:
Steph Johnson Trio, Nature Girl CD- Release party at Dizzy's. Featuring Rob Thorsen on bass and Fernando Gomez on drums. You can pick up your own personal copy of Johnson's long-awaited new disc while you are there.
Feb. 4
Head downtown to the Lyceum Theatre for a noon-time performance by the Allison Adams Tucker Trio, featuring pianist Danny Green and drummer Julien Cantelm.
Feb. 7
The Athenaeum Library will host an appearance by the critically acclaimed songbird Sara Gazarek featuring LA masters Josh Nelson on piano, Hamilton Price on bass and Zach Harmon on drums.
Feb. 8
Castellanos' guitar series continues with LA six-stringer Anthony Wilson, and Hamilton Price on bass. Get there early to grab a good seat.
Feb. 9
The San Diego Center for the Arts presents the Joshua White / David Borgo Duo at Villa Musica. Small room, nice piano and two smoking-hot musicians.
Feb. 13
Oh, my gosh! What a scheduling nightmare! There are no less than three "must-see-concerts" this evening. At UCSD "The Loft", Joshua White & Spiral, celebrating the music of John Coltrane, with David Borgo on saxophones, Mark Dresser on contrabass, Michael Dessen on trombone and Duncan Moore on drums. Or:
Larry Ochs & Don Robinson making Fresh Sound @ Space 4 Art. Bonnie Wright's excellent series will probably explode with this pairing of Ochs' screaming reeds and the fusillade exchanges from long-time collaborator Robinson's drums. Or:
The Athenaeum Library presents the Mats Eilerston Trio, featuring the leader on bass, Harmen Fraanje on piano with Thomas Stronen on drums.
See you out there!
