Ghosts of Baja: Vampire Slayer, Rancho Shampoo, Al B, and Al Lover

The spectral sounds of borderland will be showcased at La Bodega Aragon in Tijuana.

Borderland Baja is kind of a weird place.

From the infernal desert expanses of Mexicali to the sacred hills of Tecate to the industrial wastelands and afterhours avenues of Tijuana, something supernatural lurks beneath the surface – beckoning from the Other Side.

Ambient electronic artist Vampire Slayer taps in to the occult film of surreality that blankets the Mexicali Valley via beat-based dronescapes that shimmer on the edge of the senses like a mirage.

Vampire Slayer is a solo project of Valentine Torres, whose experimental dance punk trio, Maniqui Lazer, will be releasing Dead Celebration (their first album in five years) on September 9.

Tecate techno-shaman Rancho Shampoo channels the ghosts of old Kumeyaay country into atmospheric, flute-based trance rituals.

Tijuana producer Al B projects the pulse of the city by way of trap-inspired trill hop tracks, and then casts a silhouette of its soul in haunting, chimerical soundscapes.

Topping the bill is San Francisco kindred spirit Al Lover, who dishes out lysergic beats from that nostalgic chakra point where psychedelic funk, Blacksploitation soundtracks, and krautrock meet.

Free show, Wednesday, September 4 at La Bodega Aragon (Calle 9 and Negrete, Zona Centro, Tijuana).

9 p.m. – 18+
