Yesterday, I posted about Los Angeles outfits Habits and Mothers of Gut touring to San Diego to play The Griffin.
The groups just added a date in Tijuana this Sunday, August 3 at La Legendaria Ballena beneath the arch on Plaza Santa Cecilia.
In what is rapidly becoming my new favorite haunt in town, La Legendaria’s bartop dates back to the 1930s, when it was part of an Avenida Revolucion drinking spout known as La Ballena (The Whale) due to its unusual length and capacity.
La Ballena’s bar eventually got chopped up and spread throughout town, with the segment that currently graces La Legendaria having spent time at Purple Rain up the street in Zona Norte.
Today, La Legendaria’s walls tout a mural painted by local artist Lizardo that offers an atemporal urban mash-up of the people and places of Tijuana from the time of La Ballena up to modern day.
The jukebox is always kicking and a 32-ounce caguama (say it with me, ka-wa-ma) of beer goes for about three bucks.
Dive in with the legendary whale on Sunday, when former Halloween Swim Team mate Dustin M. Krapes develops strange synth and sample hooks as Habits (RIYL Black Moth Super Rainbow and XBXRX).
Touring with Habits is Mothers of Gut, a minimal yet profound (not to mention seductively psychedelic) trio from Los Angeles. Think Frank Zappa with a strong dose of krautrock synth-abilities and some Perry Ferrel lurking in the vocals. Even better, make click here:
San Diego garage rock pals Buddy Banter will represent the Dizzle along with ocular sex worker Moistrix on the projection screens.
No cover – 7 p.m.
