Trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos continues his musician-tribute series on August 3 at 98 Bottles with a night devoted to the legacy of jazz pioneer John Coltrane featuring two absolute legends of modern music: saxophonist Azar Lawrence and drummer Alphonse Mouzon, with Joshua White on piano and Hamilton Price on double-bass.
It would be hard to find two musicians more appropriate for a concert celebrating the musical giant. Coltrane's pianist McCoy Tyner hired Lawrence in the wake of the saxophonist's death, and the young hornman recorded several albums with that ensemble, as well as working with former Coltrane drummer Elvin Jones, and 'Trane's former employer Miles Davis.
Mouzon also recorded four albums with Tyner and was the drummer on Weather Report's self-titled effort in 1971. He appears on saxophonist Wayne Shorter's classic Lp, "Odyssey of Iska," multiple albums by Larry Coryell's 11th House and several Herbie Hancock records in the 1980s.
This gig represents an opportunity to hear Castellanos in a more modal, freer context. He and Lawrence have a history together and adding Mouzon, White and Price to the mix only deepens the intrigue surrounding this amalgam.
"Azar is one of the few cats that really bring me into a higher, spiritual dimension," says Castellanos. "Every time we play, I feel it. This is really exciting to be bringing guys of their stature to San Diego, I hope people take advantage of it."
Concert begins at 8 pm. I'm getting there early because this one should be a sell out.
