San Diego has lost a lot of music venues in recent months, including 4th & B, Anthology and the Calypso Café, but there is at least one new location for live performances, music and recording arts school, Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego, located at 3360 Sports Arena Blvd, Ste A. Celebrating their two year anniversary on June 8, the school also has rehearsal facilities and it’s the largest of those rooms, with a capacity of 125, which will double as an occasional concert hall. It has previously been used for student recitals and recently had the B-52’s in residence for tour rehearsals, but its first official concert will be April 26, with a performance by Dutch flamenco guitarist Max Herzog, followed by a show from guitarist Flavio Cucchi on May 15. “We’re going for more mellow sounds in this room,” said owner Mark Langford. Best known for his work with 80’s hard rockers, Bible Black, today Langford specializes in flamenco guitar. His more recent love of quieter sounds and the fact that the venue is a music school means certain genre’s need not apply. “It’ll mostly be solo artists, duo’s and quieter sounds, from folk to jazz,” he said. “Definitely no metal or thrash.” The latter only applies to their concerts, the school itself actually teaches a “Metal Mayhem” band class. He notes no particular reason for opening up the room. “We just thought it was time to expand what we’re doing,” Langford continued. “Beyond rehearsals, we use the room for workshops and the like, but I’d love to see it booked every night.” To that end, Langford is open to outside promoters using the space. “Within the perimeters I mentioned earlier, that would be great. We have Soma right across our parking lot and the Sports Arena next door, so this area is already an amazing center for entertainment. With the addition of shows in our relatively intimate hall, we hope to make things even better.”
