Brace yourself for some "alto-madness," jazz fans. On April 20, young LA saxophone master Danny Janklow comes to Dizzy's, sharing the frontline duties with SD reed virtuoso Christopher Hollyday, fellow Angeleno bassist Hamilton Price with local heavyweights pianist Joshua White and drummer Bob Weller completing the lineup.
Janklow won the top prize last year at the Detroit Jazz Festival, and subbed for his former teacher Dick Oatts in NYC with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, all impressive for an improviser still in his early twenties.
I asked him why he chose a dual alto setting for his first San Diego gig.
"Well, Joshua White and I were kind of brainstorming, trying to figure out how to best present me as a bandleader to San Diego," said Janklow. "Christopher is an exciting player, and we have similar tastes in music, and the two-alto thing isn't done very much--even though it really works."
Even still, don't expect a bebop exclusive program.
"It's going to be a nice range of material. We both have an affinity for real straight-ahead swing, but I also write a lot of tunes with a more contemporary feel--Afro-Caribbean, and Wayne Shorter influences."
Janklow has been making some waves up in LA. He's got a weekly residency at Bogie's, and is a regular at Vibrato Bar & Grill and Vitello's as well.
Downbeat is at 8 pm. Tickets are $15.
