Following last month's comprehensive new local band compilation from Ship Records, Against the Current (see this week's Blurt column) is the tenth volume of the long running Staring at the Sun series, with two local release parties, preceded by a special edition of Tim Pyles' FM94/9 show The Local 94/9 on September 23, showcasing songs from the album.
The first release show (21-up, free admission) happens at the Casbah on September 24, with New Kinetics, Neon Cough, Sundrop Electric, and one more to be announced, plus -- in the Atari Lounge -- Kevin Martin (Get Back Loretta ) and more.
A second all-age edition at Lestat's on October 6 will feature Tolan Shaw, with an additional lineup to be announced shortly. Proceeds from the $5 admission will be donated to a local animal shelter.
Staring at the Sun has been a semi-annual San Diego tradition for over a decade. "Copies are sent to radio, TV and press, both here and internationally," says Blindspot Records mainman Mendoza, who also fronts the Shambles and Manual Scan. "We generate a fair amount of media coverage for the bands, particularly with DJ Tim Pyles [FM94.9]."
Given away free, volume 10 features cartoon cover art by Chynna Clugston Flores, tying into Mendoza's long association with the comic industry. "I worked for Diamond Comics Distribution [in San Diego] and wrote a few things for [Hillcrest based] Rock 'n' Roll Comics, but my main claim to fame in comics is as a background character in an issue of Ed Brubaker's Lowlife comic book."
In addition, "I've attended Comic-Con in San Diego since I was a kid...the coolest connection of many for me was befriending Dan Clowes and having him do the infamous Manual Scan sketch." (seen below).

MORE ABOUT THE SAN DIEGO READER'S LOCAL MUSIC DATABASE
Since summer 2007, staffers have been loading our Local Music Database every single day, seven days a week, with band histories, images, articles, playable MP3s and videos, reviews, discographies, interviews, photos, album art, lyrics, influences, RIYL lists, and more.
Over 3,200 local acts, 1,000+ playable MP3s, 8,100 musicians and over 3,200 albums -- ALL this massive data is electronically cross referenced, providing an interactive encyclopedia covering the San Diego music scene from the turn of the 20th Century through about an hour ago.
The complete list can be browsed A to Z, or searched by Name, Genre, or Instrument - http://www.sandiegoreader.com/bands/search
Most of the 3,200 local album entries include cover art, track lists, credits, and even links to reviews on the Reader site.
You'd be amazed at what you can dig up in your Local Music Database!
Say you need a drummer - click "drummer" and see an alphabetical list of nearly 500 local beatmen!! http://www.sandiegoreader.com/instruments/drums/
A few random stats from the current Database (which includes bands and performers who may not still be together or active):
Number of local jazz performers: 316
Local musicians named Chris: 135 (plus 19 Christophers and 14 Christians)
Local mandolin players: 70
Full feature-length Musician Interviews: Over 400
Locale most seen in the Overheard in San Diego comic strip: the Casbah (109 times since 1996), followed by Balboa Park (51 appearances).
In addition, the Reader's This Just In breaking music news page is updated multiple times every single day, one of the most viewed pages on the entire website (I've lost track of how many competing local websites and publications later build their own stories off the Reader's This Just In posts - hi, San Diego CityBeat!): http://www.sandiegoreader.com/bands/updates/
You can send me your own This Just In breaking news at [email protected], and I'll post to that page of the website ASAP! That's also a great way to start up a Reader article about your musical endeavors, especially if you're offering us a scoop so-far unreported elsewhere (hint hint).
Our Local Music Blog Jam Session features several contributing writers who post multiple new stories every single day, including concert previews and reviews, musician interviews, new releases and tour news, lineup changes, and pretty much anything newsy happening in the local music scene - http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/jam-session/
If you’d like to receive and participate in the Reader’s weekly Local Music Newsletter Soundbite, or receive via email our thrice-daily Local Music Blog Jam Session, just click the link to do so on the Reader's Music Homepage at http://www.sandiegoreader.com/music/ .
SO: Wanna play along on your 'puter? Would YOU like to be included in the **Local Music Database**, or do you know someone or something we're missing and should include?
If you're in a band or a solo performer based in San Diego County (or with a majority of members based in SD), or if you want to contribute to new or existing pages, here's how to join the ongoing interactive adventure.
To set up a new page or Wiki-edit an existing page, start at http://www.sandiegoreader.com/band/edit/
Setting up a band page is free, and it puts that performer in the running for the daily mainpage spotlights, "Concert of the Week" profiles, and - perhaps most importantly - it provides direct access to the events department, so when upcoming gig info is submitted, the listing goes right into our database and onto the website and in the paper.
Once you set up your Reader page, to add or change text, photos, album info, embedded video, and graphics, etc, please send via http://www.sandiegoreader.com/band/edit
It takes up to a few days for new pages and/or edits to appear online, and all content submitted is subject to approval and verification (all Reader website TOS/Terms of Service rules apply).
If you want to add MP3s to your page, please send to http://www.sandiegoreader.com/mp3/upload
Event listings would go to http://www.sandiegoreader.com/submit_clubdj/ . It may take a day or two for event submissions or revisions to show up on the website.
The most updated show listings can be found at http://www.sandiegoreader.com/music/shows/ . Yes, all this info is cross-referenced in the entire Local Music Database, so anybody looking at your band page will also be able to see upcoming gig info, along with all the other data and material.
If you’d like to receive and participate in the Reader’s weekly Local Music Newsletter Soundbite, or the thrice-daily Local Music Blog Jam Session, just click the link to do so on the Reader's Music Homepage at http://www.sandiegoreader.com/music/ , or click link at the bottom of your band page!
The most direct route TO your band page is through http://www.sandiegoreader.com/accounts/profile/
Review CDs should be sent to the Reader office, marked “Attn. Hometown CDs” -- 1703 India Street, 92101.
If you have ideas for Reader stories that you want to talk to a staff writer about, the columnists can be contacted directly via their staff page - just enter contrib name in the Search bar.
I cover music, movies, events, and pop culture, and related story pitches can be sent my way via [email protected] , http://www.facebook.com/people/Jay-Allen-Sanford/1132560467 , or https://twitter.com/@jayallensanford (tho, for MUSIC stories, any of my Blurt associates like **Dave Good, Chad Deal, Dorian Hargrove, Barnaby Monk, Bart Mendoza,** or **Bobby Bray** can likely assist and advise you, we're all on *Team Reader*).
Best in all endeavors,
Jay Allen Sanford
