In a press release this morning, Orchestra Nova has announced that conductor Jung Ho Pak has resigned.
Pak’s resignation comes just a few days before the orchestra’s opening concert of the season.
Orchestra Nova violaist Linda Piatt still hopes the opening concert happens.
“I can say from a players standpoint that we still want our concerts to happen this weekend. There are numerous good conductors that would jump on the opportunity to step in on short notice. We've already set the time aside and we do not want to let down our audience.”
Beverly Lambert, Orchestra Nova CEO, told the union and player's committee that she plans to cancel this weekend's concerts.
The orchestra has suggested to Lambert that a guest conductor be found to cover the concerts this weekend.
There are whispers that the musicians will attempt to perform the concerts and honor the patrons who have purchased tickets--with or without a conductor.
There is speculation that Lambert may also resign.
The negotiations between Orchestra Nova management and the union have been at a stalemate for several weeks.
The union emphasizes that they were not at an impasse. An impasse occurs when both parties leave the table and the union was still willing to negotiate.
The primary sticking point was the hiring and firing of musicians. The perception was that Pak wanted absolute control over hiring and firing based on his assessment of a musician's emotional movement on stage.
Pak’s resignation comes after a season of sold out performances by Orchestra Nova.
