Chuck Perrin christens new venue with JazzMikan Trio+, Oct. 13

The most important San Diego jazz supporter for years has been Dizzy's owner Chuck Perrin. The man is responsible for literally hundreds of superb concerts. He has been looking for a permanent home for the club ever since he broke ties with the San Diego Wine & Culinary Center about a year ago.

Perrin has used 98 Bottles to stage many of his concerts, and that has been a beneficial arrangement--as have his deployments to McCrea Music in La Mesa and Tango Del Rey in Pacific Beach.

But it's not the same thing as having a dedicated space.

For one thing, there is the matter of Dizzy's piano. As bassist Rob Thorsen mentioned last year, a good piano is the foundation of a serious jazz venue. While Perrin was producing shows all over this past year, the piano was parked at saxophonist Daniel Jackson's house--making all of those concerts--many of which were typically excellent--seem less than a true Chuck Perrin production.

A new day may have dawned.

According to the Dizzy's website, "I have been searching for a space with the proper vibe--one that could accommodate all ages, as well as provide free accessible parking for everyone. Brian Booth of San Diego Jet Ski Rentals (4275 Mission Bay Dr.) has agreed to let me hold some shows in his showroom, and we'll see how it all works out. There's some work to be done to sculpt the raw space--that will happen over time. And I need to find a few more chairs... but the room sounds good and I envision that it will be a very satisfying experience for everyone: the musicians, the Dizzy's audience and Brian."

On Saturday, October 13, the opening concert takes place with a performance by JazzMikan Trio +, led by the virtuoso pianist Mikan Zlatkovich with veteran bassist Bob Magnusson, drummer Carlos Vazquez, plus violinist Jamie Shadowlight, saxophonist Tripp Sprague, vocalist Allison Adams Tucker--Perrin himself will sing, and San Diego icon Daniel Jackson will perform.

"I wanted to do something completely different--so I chose to focus on music from the movies," said ZLatkovich. "I told Chuck about it, and he said that would be great for the opening concert. We will be playing music from Spartacus, The Deer Hunter, Romeo & Juliet and others--and I handpicked these musicians for this music."

The much-missed Dizzy's piano is already there.

On the 14th, the wildly creative jazz trio + string quartet-- Sketchy Black Dog will return. These guys totally blew my mind the last time they were here, and I'm expecting another packed house for this one.

Sketchy Black Dog begins at 7 pm. I'd get there early. $ 15
