Holidazed and Confused: Led Zeppelin tunes for the holidays at Winston's Dec. 1

Anyone who would like some music to kick off the holidays which doesn’t involve a reindeer named Rudolph or other such clichés might want to check out the third annual Holidazed and Confused show being held Saturday, December 1, 8 p.m., at Winston’s in Ocean Beach. Featuring the music of Led Zeppelin as performed by local tribute band, Dazed and Confused, winners of the “Best Cover Band” category at the 2009 San Diego Music Awards, admission to the show will be $8, or $5 with un-opened toy or canned food. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the OB Christmas Tree Festival Food & Toy Drive.

The event takes place a mere half hour after the end of the annual Ocean Beach Holiday Parade. Dazed and Confused frontman Jason Ott notes that with the parade taking place a few yards away, the timing couldn’t be better for a show like this. “There are thousands of people 100 feet away from the club when the parade ends at 7:30,” he said. “That’s why we’re going with an 8 p.m. start time. Winston’s shows usually start at 10, but we wanted to start early to try to keep that parade crowd around.”

While Dazed and Confused usually performs a full volume rock show, for this show they’ll divide the evening into three parts, opening with an acoustic set (8 p.m.), followed by the hits (10 p.m.) and rockers (midnight). “We decided to split the night up and kind of offer two shows,” Ott said. “The acoustic set starts early and is great for those that don't like the loud stuff. It also sets a nice tone as we slowly build on the energy throughout the night.” For his part, Ott considers Led Zeppelins music to be a great holiday soundtrack. “Yes, It's good for any occasion,” he joked.

The four piece band will be augmented for this night only by a string section comprised of violinist Alicia Previn and cellist Marc Sander, as well as mandolinist Kenny James and keyboard player Mike Davenport. “Years ago we threw around the idea of doing a Zeppelin show with a full orchestra,” Ott said. “That never came to pass, but we decided to invite a few of the string players along for the first Holidazed and Confused show in 2010. It was such a big success we’ve done it every year since.”

Ott is not only happy to be able to help the local community, but also pleased just to be able to stage an event like this. “We’ll keep doing this as long as Winston’s is willing to have us,” he remarked. “I love that an event we put on is in its third year and I love to hear the comments from happy concert-goers afterwards. (But mainly) I love the feeling of accomplishment after putting on and playing such an involved event,” he said.
