One of the most august orchestras in the world is coming to San Diego to perform Mahler’s Symphony No. 9. The orchestra is the Philharmonia and they will be performing at Symphony Hall on Thursday the 15th at 8:00 pm.
The La Jolla Music Society is the sponsoring organization.
The Philharmonia ia an orchestra of legend. It was organized in 1945 by EMI executive Walter Legge. The conductor of the first concert by the Philharmonia was Sir Thomas Beecham. Beecham went on to establish the Royal Philharmonic which visited San Diego last season.
The conductors who guided the early years of the Philharmonia are “first-ballot hall-of-famers” such as Toscanini, Furtwängler, Richard Strauss, and von Karajan.
Von Karajan was something of a de facto principal conductor. He had no title but he shaped the orchestra and its sound almost from the beginning. Von Karajan was banned from conducting concerts by the Allied forces but he was not banned from the recording studio where he and the Philharmonia were prolific.
When von Karajan took the Berlin job, Legge brought in Otto Klemperer as the “October horse”. Klemperer was the principal conductor until 1972. Lorin Maazel filled in for a few years before Riccardo Muti took over.
Muti was followed by Giuseppe Sinopoli who recorded a memorable Tosca with the Philharmonia, Mirella Freni, Bryn Terfel, Samuel Ramey, and Placido Domingo.
Former Cleveland Orchestra conductor, Christoph von Dohnányi, steered the Philharmina ship until 2008 when former Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor, Esa-Pekka Salonen was given the post.
Salonen will be conducting the Mahler Nine on Thursday.
An orchestra of this magnitude playing Mahler should be a singular experience. We will find out come Thursday.
