TrioKinesis: Athenaeum Jazz at the Studio, June 2

Athenaeum Jazz at the Studio returns with what is sure to be a fascinating night of creative, boundary-pushing music this Saturday, June 2, with a performance by the New York–based TrioKinesis at 8 p.m.

TrioKinesis is made up of saxophonist Eric Person, bassist Joseph Lepore and drummer Shinnosuke Takahashi.

These guys all have serious improvising credentials.

Person is the leader of Meta-Four and the "rhythm and groove band" Metamorphosis. He has recorded and performed with jazz legends Dave Holland, McCoy Tyner, John Hicks, and David Murray.

Lepore has performed with world-class musicians like saxophonists JD Allen and Mark Turner, pianist Marc Copland, and drummer Terri Lynn Carrington.

Takahashi's bio includes time with trumpeter Terumasa Hino, pianist Makoto Ozone, and in trumpeter Marcus Printup's Soul Mission.

The three came together in 2010 while playing informal sessions at Lepore's home in Queens.

"We struck a different feeling from the very start," says Person.

"Interchange is paramount and they play a wide spectrum of expressions, textures, linear devices and colorations. They seek to go beyond the common 'worn out treads' that line so much of today's music," according to the Athenaeum press release.

On a more personal level, I can attest to seeing Eric Person live, in the '90s, at the Horton Grand Hotel as a member of Dave Holland's quartet with Steve Nelson on vibes and Gene Jackson on drums. I remember being mesmerized by the serpentine improvisations of Person on alto and sopranino saxophones and have often wondered what became of him.

I asked Dan Atkinson, jazz programming coordinator for the Athenaeum, what led to the booking of TrioKinesis.

"You and I both shared the experience of first hearing Eric Person on Dave Holland's Dream of the Elders project," said Atkinson. "Eric has a really unique sound and a subtle approach to his instrument(s), and is one of those mid-career players who doesn't get enough press or attention, particularly outside of NYC. He derives inspiration from both the tradition and the free jazz scene, so his playing is at the same time really creative and profoundly grounded in the history of the music. I find that combination to be really satisfying and fertile ground for improvisation and ensemble playing."

This is going to be a prime opportunity to hear heavy-duty NYC improvisers in an intimate setting. Don't let this one slip under your radar. You'll be glad you didn't.

Athenaeum Jazz at the Studio is located at 4441 Park Blvd. Tickets are $21 for members, $26 general admission.
